Thysanoptera of Japan

Preface

Thrips is a general term for insects in the order Thysanoptera. Their body length is usually 1 to 2 mm, with a maximum of about 15 mm. They inhabit not only living plants but also dead trees, dead branches, leaf litter, and aquatic plants. Their feeding habits include a wide range of phytophagous, fungivorous, and predaceous species. Although they are tiny and hard to spot, some species are known to cause serious damage to crops by transmitting plant-pathogenic viruses. About 720 genera and 6,200 species are known in the order Thysanoptera in the world, and they are classified into two suborders and nine families. The suborder Terebrantia includes eight families, whereas the other suborder, Tubulifera, comprises only the family Phlaeothripidae.
Regarding Japanese thrips, Miyazaki and Kudo (1988) compiled 680 papers published in Japan between 1898 and 1985 and listed 93 genera and 168 species from 4 families recorded up to that time (excluding quarantine records and species identified only at the genus level). In 1988, Zennokyo Co., Ltd. published ‘Thrips of Agricultural Products’ (edited by Miyazaki, Kudo & Umeya). Reports on Japanese thrips continued, and books written solely in Japanese sporadically described species that harm crops. Thereafter, in 2022, Zennokyo Co., Ltd. published the ‘Thrips of Japan (written by Okajima & Masumoto)’, which listed 454 species across 4 families and 152 genera recorded in Japan at the time (including 4 genera and 5 species, limited to genus identification). Thus, the number of Japanese thrips has nearly tripled over the past 30 years, but given the small number of researchers and insufficient surveys, it is expected to continue growing.
